He was a member of the public organization Russian Academy of Sciences and Arts (fringe organization, liquidated in 2018; not to be confused with the Russian Academy of Sciences). He is the author of works on the Napoleonic Wars (especially book The first scientific history of the War of 1812). Ponasenkov is an organizer of cultural events.

He makes presentations at scientific conferences. He and wrote a book about the War of 1812. Due to a scheduling conflict, he did not defend his diploma at the university; therefore it was not issued.
