Joe Hassett is an American basketball coach and former player. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and attended La Salle Academy. He played college basketball at Providence College, where he was a two-time All-American and the school's all-time leading scorer. He was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in the 1977 NBA Draft, but never played in the NBA. Hassett began his coaching career as an assistant at Providence College in 1979. He then served as an assistant at the University of Rhode Island from 1981 to 1983. In 1983, he was hired as the head coach of the University of Rhode Island, where he coached for four seasons. He then served as an assistant coach at the University of Connecticut from 1987 to 1989. In 1989, Hassett was hired as the head coach of the University of South Florida, where he coached for four seasons. He then served as an assistant coach at the University of Virginia from 1993 to 1995. In 1995, he was hired as the head coach of the University of Rhode Island, where he coached for four seasons. Hassett has also served as an assistant coach for the NBA's New Jersey Nets and the WNBA's New York Liberty. He is currently an assistant coach for the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. Hassett was selected with the 8th pick in the third round (52nd overall) of the 1977 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. He was part of the Sonics' 1979 NBA championship winning team, but moved on to the Indiana Pacers the following season after being released by the Sonics. In his only year with the Pacers (1979-80) he ranked fourth in the league with 69 three-pointers made. He also played with the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors, with whom he concluded his NBA career in 1982-83.
Joseph Patrick Hassett (born September 11, 1955) is a retired American basketball player in the NBA. A 6'5" (1.96 m) 180 lb (81.5 kg) shooting guard, he played college basketball at Providence College, where he still shares a record with four other players to score at least 500 points in a season in three consecutive years. He also represented the US in the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico City.
