Jack Albertson was an American actor, comedian, dancer, and singer who had a career spanning over 50 years. He is best known for his role as Grandpa Joe in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. He also won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Subject Was Roses (1968). Albertson was born in Malden, Massachusetts, on June 16, 1907. He began his career as a vaudeville performer in the 1920s, and later moved to Broadway and film. He appeared in numerous films throughout the 1940s and 1950s, including The Lemon Drop Kid (1951), The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), and The Sting (1973). Albertson won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Subject Was Roses (1968). He also won three Emmy Awards for his roles in Chico and the Man (1975), The Love Boat (1977), and Blossom (1991). Albertson died on November 25, 1981, at the age of 74. He was survived by his wife, actress June Havoc, and their two children.
