Fred Thompson was an American politician, lawyer, lobbyist, columnist, and actor. He served as a Republican United States Senator from Tennessee from 1994 to 2003. He also served as a United States Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee from 1981 to 1985. Thompson was born in Sheffield, Alabama, on August 19, 1942. He attended Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) and graduated with a degree in philosophy and political science in 1964. He then attended Vanderbilt University Law School, graduating in 1967. Thompson began his career as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Middle District of Tennessee in 1969. He was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee in 1981 and served until 1985. Thompson was elected to the United States Senate in 1994 and served until 2003. During his time in the Senate, he was a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and the Senate Judiciary Committee. Thompson was also an actor, appearing in films such as The Hunt for Red October, Die Hard 2, and In the Line of Fire. He also appeared in television shows such as Law & Order and The Good Wife. Thompson passed away on November 1, 2015, at the age of 73.

After failing to win a single primary, Thompson ended his presidential campaign in January 2008 and later endorsed Senator John McCain.

He did not run for reelection in 2002. A Republican, he represented his home state of Tennessee from 2 December 1994 - 3 January 2003.

For 17 years (1975 to 1992) Thompson worked as a lobbyist in Washington, D.C. representing such clients as Westinghouse, General Electric (which owns NBC Universal-NBC television network), and the Tennessee Savings and Loan League.

Senator Thompson went to Memphis State University in 1964 and Vanderbilt University in 1967.
